Take a ride on the party bus!

PARTY BUS: The group met in the lobby this morning and were transported to Carson Library in two small passenger busses. Ours actually had the name "Party Bus" painted on the front, and inside neon lights, disco lights, mirrors, a flat screen cupholders, ice bar and stretch seating.

Breakfast at the Library was followed by a long but productive day and we closed the dining room down stairs a little while ago. We were the last ones to leave having made a reconnection with a former colleague of Renee’s who works for the Roseville Library near Sacramento. Now we want to visit their new library which shares a building and lobby entrance with a hands-on energy museum geared to children. It’s also connected to a sports complex and a park designed for special needs children. Road Trip! http://www.roseville.ca.us/library/locations_n_hours.asp

Today we heard from Kathleen Deerr who spoke on family centered services. She talked about changes in parenting, including telecommuting, two parents working, people out of work, grandparents parenting, single parents, teen parents and that we need to target services to this diverse parent culture. She discussed developmentally appropriate programming and encouraged us to view parents as partners.

We did a group activity to discover potential community partners but we already have our main partner, the Family Resource Center, on board.

The highlight of the day was Jennifer Birckmayer, retired educator from Cornell who now works as a consultant. She was a blast and completely low-tech. She spoke on play (whoo-hoo) and emerging literacy. She discussed three developmental stages; infancy, toddler and preschool as they relate to play and emergent literacy. Her latest book is From Lullabies to Literacy and we are both looking forward to reading it. She talked about reworking rhymes to make them appropriate for your audience and gave this example:

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the cupboard
to get her poor dog a bone.
And when she got there
The cupboard was bare
And so the dog ordered pizza by phone!

She was excellent at modeling the abcs of attention, bonding and communication using a baby doll to model for us to model for parents. She was really inspiring and we would love to have her for a play symposium.
CoLAPL provided laptops for us to check email during the breaks but for whatever reason the ones Angelica and I sat down to would not connect with their wifi. Tonight we have encountered issues with the connection in my room and after two visits by the "help desk" moved to Angelica's room.
Ogo is tomorrow which may test Angelica's usual fondness for seaweed. Ogo and out.

  1. Wow - party bus. How cool. Sounds like you are having a good time and meeting lots of people. Did you meet that Guest Experience Manager yet? I think you said you were going to try to connect with her. I met her at CLA - she came to our programa and afterwards came and introduced herself She wanted to know about our collateral materials - she really liked them.

Glad to hear the content of this is reaching beyond just the boundaries of Family Place but also into our goals and objectives - that's defintiely a win win for us then.

Thanks for the updates and for taking the tim;p[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[['
    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????"
(that was Leo just saying "meow" in his laptop language...) So, like I was saying, thanks for taking the time to do this and represent us. Onwards and Upwards...(to the second floor)

  2. Party bus? Kewl, I'm on board! (But don't think this is the kind of bus Jim Collins is talking about...)

And I believe Michelle and I heard Jennifer Birckmeyer speak at the Fit for Life/Family Place seminar we went to in NYC two years ago. From our blog (yes, these have a purpose and I would at some point tell Bessie (and everyone else in Carson) that you are blogging the conference as a great way to share info with the mothership. Anyway, here are Michelle's observations on JB's talk:

So, today we had a variety of speakers, including one from the Family Place training. She was interesting because I didn't agree with much of anything she had to say.

    1. "Libraries should stop doing arts and crafts activities in the library and focus on health programs..." Don't agree (I think there can be both).
    2. "Librarians should not be entertainers during storytime, instead should just be there to facilitate the interaction between child and parent." Then she went on to tell us that Family Place programs have the library staff person keeping the kid busy while the parent has an opportunity to interact with some kind of medical or social service professional. ???...

  3. BTW - Has Kathleen Deerr said anything about why I never returned the original Family Place application?...

  4. Re - Jennifer Birckmeyer. I thought she had some good info. too when I heard her last year because she talked about the baby's brain development.

I remember one of her points was to do activities that focused on the baby's experience with an object vs. taking a craft project home which fits into our concepts with the PAL islands.

  5. I actually remember this post of Michelle's from the Fit for Life blog and the sacrilege of no crafts at library programs. We've done Healthy RC crafts galore - so we do both.

Today Gyroscope visited. I'll let RK and MP fill you in on the details but Scott and Tim were very nice. Funny to hear a voice first then see a face. Tim was exactly what I pictured, but Scott wasn't. We went to Dragon Inn for lunch and despite the loud hacking sounds coming from the kitchen, had a lovely time. Heard about some of their other projects and their thoughts on our project's timeframe and progress and how it compare with others.

  6. I agree, we have had quite a few Healthy RC crafts, and they've been so much fun for the kids. Our Family Saturdays just wouldn't be the same without the craft portion.

I'm going to start reading some child development books. I always wanted to take a class on child development, but I never got around to it cause there were so many interesting classes to pick from in my Cal Poly days. Shall I take some classes at a community college? Hehehe, I don't think I'm ready to go back to school quite yet....I have about 300 more books on my to read list. Learning is just so much fun.

  7. Meow Leo! We love kitties! Especially kitties who type.

First - thank you to all the loyal followers. It has been quite amusing to read all of your posts! Thank you!

Next - Angela Yang - Experience Librarian was not here :(. A coworker came in her place, who we grilled and her response was ... "I have no idea what she does. You have to ask her." More later on that.

Finally - the big Birckmayer situation. We are shocked that this is the same individual. She was all about the babies and communicating, activities, supporting developmentally appropriate arts and crafts (they don't like the word craft because to them that implies product over process). Yes, we were thinking inservice or play symposium. We will have to have a good discussion about this later. And ... You go Lorena!

We're so sorry we missed Gyroscope and we're excited to hear about that!

I have to say you all are HILARIOUS in your blog posts - very entertaining! :)

We're heading over to do our main post for the evening ....
